Description
Abstract
Sampling sites of the Spöl flooding monitoring programme

Purpose
The main question of this project is the one concerning the consequeces of artificial floods on benthic ecosystems (algea, invertebrates) in a subalpine river. The damm of Punt da Gall completely changed the original discharge and disturbance pattern of the underlying river sections; rest water is more or less constant, floods are missing. This selects organisms specialised for constant discharges.
The planned artificial floods will change those habitats and alter the structure of the benthic biocoenosis. We expect most algea and invertebrate populations to recover quickly after a flooding event. Nevertheless, the altered discharge patterns are expected to result in a long-lasting change in the structure of the bentic ecosystems. The population of species not adapted to floods will become smaller or will dissappear completely.
