Each year, the number of marmots, their population development as well as the start and the end of hibernation in the SNP is monitored. The number of individuals has been monitored yearly between 1918 and 1927. Additional relevées have been realized in 1963, 1967, 1970 and 1975. For certain regions additional relevées have been realized in 1964, 1973 and 1966 until 1969
The SNP borders are the perimeter for the marmot monitoring programme.
