Subalpine Rasen im Schweizerischen Nationalpark: Produktivität und Nährstoffgehalt von Pflanzen in Abhängigkeit von Beweidung und Bodenphosphor
Vegetation und Herbivore interagieren auf mannigfache Weise. Beweidung kann die Pflanzenproduktion beeinflussen, die Vegetationszusammensetzung ändern oder in Nährstoffkreisläufe eingreifen. Um Reaktionen der Pflanzen auf Beweidung durch den Rothirsch (Cervus elaphus L.) zu untersuchen, wurden auf einem subalpinen Rasen im Schweizerischen Nationalpark Schnittexperimente durchgeführt. Die Untersuchungsfläche ist eine seit rund 90 Jahren nicht mehr bewirtschaftete Alpweide, die heute von Kurzrasen (Beweidungsdruck durch Hirsche hoch) und Hochrasen (Beweidungsdruck gering) dominiert wird. Mit meiner Feldstudie wollte ich folgende Fragestellungen untersuchen: 
1. Wird die Produktivität und der Nährstoffgehalt der Vegetation durch Beweidung verändert?
2. Gibt es diesbezüglich einen Unterschied zwischen den beiden Vegetationstypen?
3. Ist der Phosphorgehalt im Boden ein geeigneter Indikator für die Produktivität der Vegetation?
Auf zwei vergleichbaren Boden-Phosphorgradienten wurden Verbissschutzkörbe aufgestellt. Pro Phosphorstufe wurde die oberirdische Pflanzenproduktion unter simulierter Beweidung gemessen: Mehrmals geschnitten ("beweidet") bzw. ein Kontrollschnitt am Ende der Vegetationsperiode ("unbeweidet"). Bei beiden Vegetationstypen unterschied sich das totale Trockengewicht zwischen den zwei Schnittregimes nicht. Der Wachstumsverlauf der beiden Vegetationstypen war verschieden: Im Kurzrasen sank die Produktion im Saisonverlauf kontinuierlich, während sie im Hochrasen am Saisonende zusammenbrach. Vegetationsanalysen im Kurzrasen zeigten eine Zunahme von Phosphor und Stickstoff unter simulierter Beweidung. Meine Resultate deuten darauf hin, dass Phosphor limitierend wirkt, und sich daher als guter Indikator für die Produktivität von Pflanzen subalpiner Rasen erweist. 
Im Unterschied zu Savannen-Grasländern, wo beweidete Pflanzen mit Überkompensation reagieren, beweist dieses Experiment, dass in subalpinen Graslandökosystemen lediglich Kompensationswachstum stattfindet. Die Studie zeigt weiter, dass grosse Herbivore kurzfristig in Ökosystemprozesse einzugreifen vermögen: Der Nährstoffgehalt von Pflanzen wird erhöht, was die Weideflächen attraktiv machen, und wiederum Wildtiere anziehen kann.
