Abstract:
Long-term monitoring of vegetation |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.
Long-term monitoring of vegetation
One focus of botanical research in the Swiss National Park is the long-term monitoring of vegetation development. Josias Braun-Blanquet established approximately 30 permanent plots between 1917 and 1921. As of 1939 Balthasar Stüssi extended the monitoring program to more than 160 plots. Since relevées have been sampled in intervals of seven years in average, we are now able to make precise statements about long-term changes in the most important vegetation communities after abandonment of the Park. Today we have a series of observations of the development of the vegetation going back 90 years to the beginning of the Swiss National Park.
