Abstract:
The Vegetation map VEG (1:50000) covers the entire area of the Swiss National Park as well as most of the «Engiadina Bassa» and «Val Müstair». VEG differs between 39 vegetation units ranging from montane to alpine sucession levels. |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

See general description
The data set VEG belongs to the Scientific Comission of the Swiss NationalparkWNPK. For scientific purposes concerning the Swiss National Parc these data can be obtained via the GIS-SNP-WEBMASTER. An individual contract between the data user on one side and the WNPK and the Swiss National Park GIS on the other side settles the intended use, the duration of use, the copyright for publication etc. of the delivered data.

The vegetation map «Zoller» went through different stages of processing. First of all this map is the result of approximatly 10 years of intensive field-work, performed by Prof. Zoller (retired) and his collaborators (Botanical Institute, University of Basel, Switzerland). The original recordings were done in a scale of 1:25'000. For printing these data were transcribed into a scale of 1:50'000. As many corrections but only few generalisation steps were performed these data (1:50'000) were integrated into the Swiss National Park GIS and not the original ones. Morever the map was produced using the cartographic software SCITEX thus delivering digital data sets. The following institutions were involved in producing the printed map: Cartography: Ingenieurbüro für Kartographie W.-J. Lange (Kirchzarten-Burg Deutschland) Films for printing: IOTEC S.A. (Brussels, Belgium) Print: Hallwag AG (Bern, Switzerland) Some of the history of the vegetation map can be read in the «Erläuterungen zur Vegetationskarte» by Zoller (1995).
Several processing steps were necessary to integrate the SCITEX-data into ARC/INFO-format: - Transformation of SCITEX-rasterfiles into SCITEX-digitfiles (IOTEC,Belgium) - Conversion of SCITEX-digitfiles into ARC/INFO-exportfiles (IOTEC,Belgium) - Import of ARC/INFO-exportfiles into ARC/INFO of the Swiss Nationalpark GIS - Verification of SCITEX-codes and codes of vegetation units - Transformation into swiss coordinate system

The Item PG contains the code for the vegetation units. PG is also the relate-item to the info-file veg_zoller.atr and contains numbers from 1 -39 for vegetation units; class 40 stands for settlements.
The info-files veg_zoller.pat (geometry-file)contains the geometry of VEG. As VEG manages 6592 vegetation polygons but only 39 vegetation units, geometry and attributes are kept in different files using the ARC/INFO-relate environment.
